Joseph S. Howanski: TBF/TBM-1 Avenger On October 20, 1944, the Allies' battle to recapture the Philippines commenced with the invasion of Leyte Island. The Battle of Leyte Gulf, as the invasion and subsequent critical naval engagements came to be called, was a resound defeat for the Japanese Navy, once arrogant masters of the Pacific. During the lengthy struggle for Leyte, intrepid American pilots sunk four Japanese carriers and most of their battleships -- the bulk of what remained of Japan's Imperial Navy. In action off Luzon's northeastern coast, TBM Avengers based on the carrier U.S.S. Enterprise -- part of Admiral Halsey's Task Force 38 -- participated in this victory, flying more than 500 naval aircraft sorties during the day-long engagement known as the Battle of Cape Engano.
