Joseph S. Howanski: FJ-1 Fury
Germany's successes with jet aircraft late in World War II prompted the U.S. Navy to speed development of a carrier jet fighter. North American built three XFJ prototypes, and on September 11, 1946, the FJ-1 prototype made its first flight. Performing capably but not exceptionally, the FJ-1 version of the Fury was in service for a brief time before being relegated to second line status. Only a limited number of the straight wing version of the Fury were built, and only one Navy squadron -- Navy Fighter Squadron 5 aboard the carrier U.S.S. Boxer -- was ever equipped with this type, which were the last production U.S. Navy fighters equipped with machine guns. Redesigned with swept wings, the FJ-1 went on to become the world's most successful land-based fighter of the 1950s, the Air Force's F-86 Sabre. Artwork Copyright © 1992 Unicover Corporation.
