Joseph S. Howanski: A-4 Skyhawk
The longest-lived attack aircraft ever built as well as one of the most efficient, the venerable Douglas A-4 Skyhawk served as the Navy's premier light attack, carrier-based aircraft for more than two decades. This daringly-crafted machine reflected Douglas' mounting concern over the increasingly intricate designs and ever-inflating costs of combat aircraft. The Skyhawk entered front-line service in 1957 and proved indispensable during the Vietnam War. In 1968, the A-7 Corsair entered carrier service and eventually usurped the A-4's position as primary attack aircraft. But Skyhwaks such as the "Lady Jessie," with the Navy Attack Squadron VA-164 on the carrier U.S.S. Hancock, continued to fly missions in Southeast Asia until the early 1970s and remained a vital component of Navy air power for another decade. Artwork Copyright © 1992 Unicover Corporation.
