Joseph S. Howanski: Martin BM
Though the initials "BM" weren't necessarily intended to mean "benchmark," the Martin BM was exactly that. The first U.S. Navy aircraft specifically designed to serve as a dive bomber, the two-man BM-2 was the initial progeny of a tactical concept that was still in its infancy in the late 1920s. The first prototypes of this all-metal biplane were ordered in 1928. But only enough production models of the BM-2 were made for two squadrons, which served aboard the U.S. aircraft carriers Saratoga and Lexington through the mid-1930s, an era in which U.S. armed forces were operating under severe budget constraints. The BM-2 was a foreshadowing of the future of the U.S. Navy's dive bomber force, which was instrumental in many of America's successful naval battles in World War II.
