Joseph S. Howanski: Grumman F6F Hellcat
The F6F Hellcat is hailed as the most significant and effective carrier fighter aircraft of World War II. In early 1943, Grumman's Hellcats began to join line combat units and ultimately became America's main line carrier-fighters. The Hellcat's impressive war record speaks for itself: of the 6,500 victories over Japanese aircraft awarded to U.S. Navy carrier based units, nearly 5,000 went to F6F pilots; its shore-based pilots earned over 200 more. One of its most important engagements was the Battle of the Philippine Sea, known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot." This action pitted the massive U.S. Navy Task Force 58 against the Japanese Mobile Fleet. On June 19, 1944, the action began with a huge air strike launched by the Japanese -- but by the end of the day their losses grossly outnumbered those of the United States.
