Joseph S. Howanski: F9F-2B Panther Near the end of World War II, Grumman began designing its first jet fighter craft -- the F9F Panther. Though the original engine intended for the aircraft was incapable of supplying the necessary power, it was replaced by a more advanced British Rolls-Royce engine manufactured under license by Pratt & Whitney. Grumman's fighter saw heavy action in the Korean War, being the most numerous jet aircraft available to the U.S. Navy's carrier squadrons. Before that conflict was over, it flew with 24 Navy squadrons as well as with a number of U.S. Marine units. The Panther was the first Navy jet to see combat in Korea, shooting down a North Korean Yak-9 on its initial mission in 1950. A MiG-15 destroyed by a Panther a few months later became the Navy's first-ever jet-to-jet kill. Artwork Copyright © 1993 Unicover Corporation.
