Stanley Paine: Armstrong Whitworth Argosy The three-engined Argosy was the first civil aircraft designed by Armstrong Whitworth; it was produced in response to an Imperial Airways requirement for a multi-engined airliner for its European routes. Imperial Airways had inherited from its predecessor airlines a number of single-engined types with relatively poor safety records. This safety record, coupled with the need for an aircraft that could operate routes over inhospitable terrain, led Imperial Airways to revive a 1922 requirement for a "Middle Eastern" airliner. The Argosy, which is featured in this artwork, was considered suitable, and Imperial Airways ordered two examples. The first of these entered service in 1926. With their superior safety record and capacity to carry twenty passengers, they proved popular and remained in service until 1936. Armstrong Whitworth was establsihed in 1914 and built observation aircraft during World War I. Between the wars, Armstrong Whitworth built some outstanding aircraft, including the Siskin single-seat fighter and the Scimitar fighter, which in 1934 was among the world's fastest fighters. The company's most famous product, though, was the Whitley twin-engined bomber, of which 1,824 were produced by July 1943. In 1936, Armstrong Whitworth became a member company in the new Hawker Siddeley Group. After World War II, the company continued to build popular military aircraft, but its civil aircraft saw only limited success.
