Paul and Chris Calle: 1980s - E.T. The blockbuster movie of the decade, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, was a product of renowned director Steven Spielberg. Winning Oscars for best screenplay, score and special effects, the 1982 film starred Henry Thomas as Elliott, a 10-year-old boy who befriends an Extra-Terrestrial (E.T.). One of filmdom's most delightful characters, this intriguing creature enchanted audiences with its large, expressive eyes and distinctive muppetlike gestures. The story takes place in an American suburb, where E.T. and his fellow aliens land their spaceship in a woods near Elliott's house. When searching men with flashlights frighten the creatures, they rush back to the ship and leave E.T. stranded on Earth. Developing a friendship with the alien, Elliott keeps it safely hidden in his bedroom closet until E.T. is eventually revealed to the boy's family and friends. Elliott learns to communicate with this small, intriguing creature, whose long, knobby fingers have the power to heal. Through telepathy, the alien shares its emotions with the boy, and Elliott learns that E.T. wants to go home. And, with mixed emotions, he does.
