John Benson: Hearst Castle It took more than twenty years to build it, but by 1947 newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst's dream of owning his own castle on the hill had been realized. A magnificent twin-tower castle embraced the crest of San Simeon, overlooking the blue Pacific. Three elaborate guest houses cascaded down the hillside, surrounded by beautifully terraced gardens and well-planned groves of shade trees. Through the years, the Castle and its adjacent houses played host to the friends of William Randolph Hearst, and the guest list included the likes of Greta Garbo, Buster Keaton, King Vidor, Beatrice Lillie, Norma Shearer and John Gilbert, among others. The spectacular beauty and glory of the Castle's unmatched splendor is credited to Hearst himself, and to the architect who designed it for him. The architect was Julia Morgan. The first woman architect to graduate from Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she chose this Castle to be her greatest work. It was Morgan's brilliance in planning and execution which created Hearst Castle -- a magical playground for the rich that even today reflects the romance of an elegant era.
