Paul and Chris Calle: 1930s - Engineers Harness Nature Despite worldwide economic hardship caused by the Great Depression, the 1930s was a decade of extraordinary accomplishment. Spectacular building projects gave promise to people everywhere that the world was becoming a better place to live. Overcoming nature's barriers, engineers designed monumental bridges, canals linking inland cities with seaports, and hydroelectric dams that provided irrigation, flood control and electric power to nearby communities. One of the world's longest span bridges, Australia's Sydney Harbour Bridge, was completed in 1932. That same year, Europe's largest dam and hydroelectric station was finished -- the Dneproges Dam in the Ukraine. The United States produced magnificent structures like the George Washington and Golden Gate bridges, and the Grand Coulee Dam.
