Paul and Chris Calle: 1980s - Cosby Show Created by Bill Cosby, Ed Weinberger and Michael Leeson, The Cosby Show became the first hit situation comedy to feature a successful African-American family. Shunning jive jargon and negative stereotypes, Cosby envisioned a program that would present a positive view of black family life. The Cosby Show premiered on September 20, 1984, and became one of the most popular television comedies of the decade. Starring Bill Cosby as Cliff Huxtable and Phylicia Rashad as his wife Clair, the show was based on the Huxtables' life with their five children. Although Cliff and Clair were successful professionals (an obstetrician and a lawyer), family interactions were the primary focus of each episode. Conflicts were resolved with love, warmth and forgiveness, tempered with delightful humor. The Huxtables were strict but loving parents who valued honesty and openness in family communication. American families of all races and social classes could relate to the situations on The Cosby Show -- a child's pet dies, bad school grades, birthday celebrations, running away from home, family vacations, funerals, and eccentric relatives. During its run of 208 episodes, The Cosby Show won six Emmys, 14 NAACP Image Awards, a Peabody, and a Humanitas Award.
