Michael Warren: American Bald Eagles at Eagle Bay, Alaska The Bald Eagle is so named because from a distance the white feathers of its head give it the appearance of baldness. Its tail feathers are also white, forming a striking contrast to the bird's otherwise dark body. Bald Eagles do not fully develop this distinctive coloring until they are about four years old, remaining dark brown with scattered light markings until then. These majestic eagles also breed for the first time at about age four. Like many species of birds, they keep the same mate for life. If one dies, however, the other will usually find another mate and breed again the next year. Though eagles sometimes gather in areas where food is plentiful during the hard winter months, a pair of eagles claims the territory around its nest and keeps all other eagles away during breeding season. The territory claimed by eagles may be very small -- three Bald Eagles' nests may be located within one mile of each other -- or quite large -- the Golden Eagle will defend a territory that covers from twenty to sixty square miles. Though there are concentrations of nesting pairs in Alaska and Florida, for the most part Bald Eagles are few and far between. Many have been killed by hunters and trappers -- more than one hundred twenty-five thousand were shot in Alaska alone between 1917 and 1952 to protect the salmon and fur industries there so that now only about fifteen thousand are left in the United States.
