Among the brightest and showiest flowers are the Papaver or true poppies whose brilliant blossoms bloom in colors of red, pink, violet, yellow, and white. Legend has it that following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, red poppies sprung up in the battlefield, seeded by the blood of dead soliders. Similarly, after World War I, poppies covered Flanders Field, the site of so much continuous fighting. Understandably, this beautiful crimson flower has come to be the Memorial Day emblem of all World War veterans.

This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Lesotho Papaver aculeatum stamp Flora and Fauna of the World Collection issued February 13, 1978.
