Basil Smith: Spider Orchid Orchids are usually associated with the steamy heat of the tropics or the controlled atmosphere of the professional greenhouse, but New Zealand's orchids are different. The Spider Orchid, for example, grows in damp, shady areas of the New Zealand countryside rather than in tropical heat. To stimulate pollination, this orchid attracts insects to its reddish-black flower by exuding a sickly-sweet nectar.
