Basil Smith: Orchids - Epidendrum secundum
The name Epidendrum comes from the Greek epi, upon and dendron, a tree. As the name suggests, these members of the lovely orchid family grow perched in trees though they take no nourishment from their hosts. These orchids are restricted in the wild to warm parts of southern North America, Central America, and the West Indies.
