Basil Smith: Orchids - Maxillaria conferta
Maxillaria consists of about four hundred evergreen species of the orchid family, including Maxillaria conferta. The name is derived from the Latin maxilla, or jaw, because of the jaw-like flowers common to the group. These orchids are chiefly tree-perchers, like their cousins Epidendrum, and, occasionally, these delicate flowering plants can even be found perching on rocks.
