Yvonne Skargon: Roses - Rosa Mutabilis In the gardens of England, Rosa Mutabilis is a standout, for it is one of the few roses which can display several different colors at one time. At first, the buds of Mutabilis are coppery in color, but as they open, a flower of the most beautiful shade of salmon, shaped like a butterfly, begins to appear. Later, as the flower matures, it fades to a crimson mixed with pale yellow. When all stages of the flower exist at one time on one bush, the display of coloration can be astounding. The exact origins of Mutabilis are unknown, but many horticulturists suspect that the rose was introduced to England in the 18th century. What is known is that the rose is a beautiful and fragrant addition to any garden. Mutabilis should be planted in a sunny location with excellent drainage. The location should provide good air circulation, but should not be windy. Mutabilis obviously should be planted in a highly visible location, since its appearance needs to be appreciated. Watering is especially important, since inadequate amounts of water can severely damage the rose. Too much water, on the other hand, can cause the rose to develop root-rot and die. One good deep watering is much better for Mutabilis than several shallow waterings. In winter, wise gardeners often cover or "hill" the primary stem of the bush with dirt and debris to guard against severe cold and dehydration. Thus, the roses will come back in the spring to brighten the garden.
