In 1903, Rosa moyesii was introduced to the Western world from China, where it had been favored for centuries. Named after Reverend E.J. Moyes, a missionary in China, the species survives to this day as one of the most colorful flowers in the gardens of Great Britain. Early in the season, Rosa moyesii will bloom in profusion, filling the air with its sweet fragrance. The abundance of red flowers on the shrub-like rose bush are a delight, but sadly, the blooms do not last long. Rosa moyesii is hardy and its leaves are a dark, attractive green. Today, roses of the bush-type such as Rosa moyesii are known as old-fashioned shrub roses. Some imports from the East were hybridized with European varieties to develop unique new varieties, widely ranging in color and type. Roses have fascinated gardeners for centuries, but Napoleon's Empress Josephine's passion for roses and gardening captured the attention of thousands and helped the popularity of rose gardening grow to new proportions in the late 1700s. So enthusiastic was Josephine that she kept close contact with one of Great Britain's leading nursery men, John Kennedy, even during the Napoleonic wars. By the time of her death in 1814, she had grown some two hundred fifty varieties in her gardens. Crossing and re-crossing varieties of roses by enthusiastic breeders continues at a fantastic rate, and today, thousands of different varieties fill any gardener's needs.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain 31p Rosa moyesii stamp issued July 16, 1991.
