Yvonne Skargon: Roses - Rosa Silver Jubilee In 1978, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated. That year, a living tribute was paid to the Queen with the introduction of a very special rose, Rosa Silver Jubilee. After years of selective breeding, the exquisite pink rose was unveiled and given a warm reception among the gardeners of Great Britain. Now, better than a decade after its introduction, the rose is still a very stunning addition to any garden. With delicate pink, shapely flowers, the rose stands out in the garden. Its fragrance is perhaps more sweetly subtle than other rose varieties, but it is nonetheless a pleasure to the olfactory senses. The flowers, like many hybrid tea roses, are usually single, with long stems. The rose bush itself is hardy, vigorous and bushy. The leaves of the Silver Jubilee are deep green with a very glossy finish. The Silver Jubilee is best grown in deep, rich soil with plenty of sunshine. It can survive in poorer soil, but it must be well-drained. Without good drainage, the Silver Jubilee, as with many roses, will develop root-rot and perish. Hybrid tea roses are perhaps the most beautiful of all roses, and are known for their long stems, fragrance, beautiful form, and double flowers with high, pointed centers. Many varieties of hybrid tea roses -- one of which is the Silver Jubilee -- have been developed over the years. Most are quite hardy; some varieties are grown in the harshest of climates with proper care and attention.
