Yvonne Skargon: Roses - Rosa Harvest Fayre Rosa Harvest Fayre is a perfect example of the expertise of the rose breeder. Selected as Great Britain's 1990 Rose of the Year, Harvest Fayre is a floribunda-type rose which displays rich, thick flowers shaded with the most delicate apricot buff. It is a late bloomer, perfectly complimenting other roses which flower and mature much earlier. Floribundas such as Harvest Fayre are among the more popular bush roses, but they were a relatively late entrant into the world of rose gardening. In 1924, Dr. J.H. Nicolas produced "Rochester," the first floribunda, by crossing a hybrid tea rose with a polyantha-type rose. Soon, floribundas were sweeping the horticultural world in popularity. Floribundas are characterized by their large clusters of blooms which come in a variety of colors. The beautiful form of floribunda flowers is one reason for their amazing popularity, but their incredible vigor and ability to withstand low temperatures has made them a favorite in northern-clime gardens around the world. And while floribundas themselves are relatively recent additions to rose gardening, their origins -- as with all roses -- go far back. Nearly five thousand years ago, roses were grown in gardens of kings in the Middle East. Through the years, other types of roses were introduced from all parts of the world and the technique of hybridizing virtually revolutionized rose growing. Today, roses come in all shapes and sizes.
