Basil Smith: Cup-and-Saucer Vine Called the Cup-and-Saucer Vine, the Cobaea scandens is the most commonly cultivated species of its genus. These tropical and subtropical herbaceous vines have long stalks and alternate, pinnate leaves ending with branched tendrils, which are extremely sensitive to the touch. Pairs of leaflets form the plant's "saucer," while green-to-violet blooms constitute its unusual "cup."
