Stories of power and overwhelming tragedy flowed from the pens of England's first female novelists. Charlotte Brontë is depicted standing in front of Haworth Parsonage where she spent the lonely years that ultimately resulted in her respected novel, Jane Eyre. Her younger sister Emily is pictured on the English moors that she loved so deeply. Throughout her novel, Wuthering Heights, the somber moors permeate the atmosphere with a sense of mysterious danger. Both portraits were adapted from paintings of the Brontë sisters created by their brother Branwell when the women were in their early twenties. The portrait of Mary Ann Evans, known to the literary world as George Eliot, shows her standing in front of Griff House where she was raised. Later, much of Griff House would be recreated in her novel, The Mill on the Floss. The final portrait, adapted from a drawing by Samuel Lawrence, depicts Elizabeth Gaskell at the age of forty-four standing in front of her Manchester home. This is where Mrs. Gaskell raised her many children and created her novels about life in rural England, including North and South. For each of these women, writing was a means of expression. During the time they wrote their novels, the woman's voice was a stranger to the literary world. But, as pioneers in a field of letters dominated by their male companions, each of them excelled.
