Basil Smith: Catharanthus Roseus
The smooth-leaved Madagascar Periwinkle is a perennial herb native to tropcial America. Its pink or white flowers bloom year-round, occasionally displaying a dark red eye. Though it grows in the wild, folk tales of the plant's medicinal powers led to its wide cultivation and in recent years, the Madagascar Periwinkle has become the source of an important drug used in the treatment of leukemia.
