Paul and Chris Calle: People See Themselves in New Ways Thanks to the newly emerged field of psychology, drawing on the rich background of philosophy and medicine, people of the 20th century would never again see themselves or their surrounding world in quite the same way. The psychoanalytic movement began with the clinical observations of Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, who devised the technique of free association. Freud's controversial book, The Interpretation of Dreams, was published in 1900. It emphasized the importance of the unconscious and dreams, as well as early childhood experiences, in the development of personality. Other influential psychological theorists of the 20th century include Otto Rank, Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Erik Erikson and Erich Fromme.
