Chris Calle: Bret Harte At a very early age, American author Bret Harte had already begun to show an energetic interest in literature. As a boy he read countless books in his father's unusually large library, gained a good deal of knowledge in English literature, and even began to write while still a child. Harte's first interest in writing was verse, and at the age of only eleven, one of his poems was published in the New York Sunday Morning Atlas. Longing for a more adventurous life, Harte moved to California in 1854 where he could capture the spirit of the wild west in his writings. After securing a job with a small town newspaper, Harte began to write about life in western towns and gold mining camps. His tales of saloons, gold diggers and rowdy poker players soon became the focus of his books. Bret Harte won literary fame with his books The Outcasts of Poker Flat and The Luck of Roaring Camp which transported his readers into the world of America's wild west. Harte's fame soon spread throughout the nation, and readers eagerly grabbed up his books. For, Harte was able to capture the reader's imagination with the adventures of colorful characters and the romantic lore of the west. Artwork Copyright © 1986 Unicover Corporation.
