Brian Sanders: Fijian Ndrua
Artist: Brian Sanders
The Fijian warship was a swift double canoe capable of transportation as many as 250 warriors on the open sea. In the 19th century, some Fijian warships were more than 70 feet long and under sail could reach speeds of 12 mph. Many who had sailed on a Fijian warship described the sea as sounding like a hissing cauldron, as the vessel literally sliced through the waves.
