R.G. Finney: White Clouded Leopard Mother and Cub Playfully pawing at their mother's tail, a pair of Clouded Leopard kittens frolic on a log that has fallen across a pond. Although the juveniles are absorbed in their fun, the adult cat has spotted something in the distance that captures her attention. Ever wary of the many dangers that lurk in the wild, she is always ready to protect her precious offspring. Until they are nearly two weeks old, Clouded Leopard babies are blind and virtually helpless, requiring constant care from their doting mother. Though little is known about these secretive creatures -- particularly about their social behavior -- it is believed that by nine months of age the youngsters become very independent. Indigenous to the rain forests of Southeast Asia, Clouded Leopards spend much of their lives sleeping in treetops. From these lofty vantage points terrestrial prey such as deer and wild boar can be easily discerned. When in pursuit of their intended victims, these Leopards agilely climb down tree trunks, skillfully swinging from a single hind paw before dropping down on their hapless quarry. Monkeys, squirrels and birds also fall victim to the hungry cats and often are caught by one swipe of a Clouded Leopard's immense paw.
