R.G. Finney: Black Panther Mother with Cubs Sitting One of the most feared of all big cats is the black panter. This all-black cat is a strikingly beautiful sub-species of the Panthera pardus. Its coloration is quite unusual, as most of the Panthera species are a warm, rich spotted brown rather than black. Perhaps because of his extraordinary color, this panther is more feared than the brown spotted leopard of the same species. Certainly there are numerous legends about his ferocity, and indiscriminate destruction of this regal animal has occurred as a result. However, this stealthy creature has adapted to a wide range of environments many of which are removed from civilization, thus lessening his danger. Living in dark, heavily forested regions, the black panther's powerful body and deadly teeth insure this predatory cat of sufficient meals on deer, gazelles, wild cattle and buffalo. His magnificent fur, whether black or a luxurious cinnamon brown, assists his survival even further, for it helps camouflage him from any intended prey and makes hunting easier as well. Underneath his predominant colors are tiny, dark rosettes which enhance his already handsome coat. Even under the glossy black fur, these spots show through faintly, from head to tail. Being a nocturnal animal, this dapple-coated cat spends much of the day lazily sprawled on a tree limb where he has a secure refuge and an ideal lookout for food or enemy.
