Gene Jarvis: Otanthus Maritimus -- Cottonweed The Cottonweed Otanthus maritimus is a coastal and seashore plant of western Europe and the Mediterranean region, Cottonweed is especially well adapted to seaside gardens and sandy, dry soils. The scientific name, Otanthus maritimus, was derived from the Greekword otos, which means ear, and anthos, which means flower. This name describes the appearance of the ear-shaped flowers of the plant shown in this artwork.
