Tom McNeely: Bronko Nagurski
Born Bronislaw Nagurski in Rainy River, Ontario, on November 3, 1908, Bronko Nagurski was a giant of American football. Famous for his intimidating physical strength and ferocious action on the gridiron, Nagurski played tackle and end on defense and fullback on offense at the University of Minnesota from 1927 to 1929, and was named All-American at both tackle and fullback in 1929, the only player to ever be named All-American at two positions. Legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice once summed up Nagurski's wide array of gridiron capabilities: "He was a star end, a star tackle and a crushing fullback who could pass. Eleven Nagurskis would be a mop-up. It would be something close to murder and massacre." In 1930, Nagurski joined the National Football League's (NFL) Chicago Bears as a fullback, but also played linebacker and tackle, often playing 60 minutes. As legend has it, during one game-winning touchdown run at Wrigley Field, the practically unstoppable Nagurski broke one defensive player's shoulder, knocked another player out cold and finally ran into a brick wall, producing a large crack in the structure. Retiring in 1937 so he could wrestle professionally, he returned to the Bears in 1943 for a final season to help fill the void of players created by World War II. Today, as a definitive testament to Nagurski's greatness on the field, the best defensive player in college football now wins the Bronko Nagurski Award. Artwork Copyright © 2003 Unicover Corporation.
