Gherman Alexeyvich Komlev: Luge - Men's Single/Olympics "Luge" is a French word meaning a low, child's sled with low runners and no steering device. In the Olympic Games, the luge is largely steered by transference of body weight. Speeds above 60 miles per hour are not uncommon in this dangerous sport. Featured in this artwork is an Olympic medal of the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, where the luge competition was held for the first time. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Romania The World's Salute to the Olympics Luge stamp issued December 28, 1987.
