Not particularly prolific, Orangutans concentrate on having a few well-cared-for offspring. Motherhood for these large apes is easier than it used to be. When pet Orangutans were popular, hunters callously killed mothers and sold the babies. Today, though, keeping them as pets is outlawed in their native Malaysia and Indonesia. There are even rehabilitation stations where former pets learn survival skills before being returned to the wild.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® Commemorative Cover series for the United Nations Flora and Fauna of the World issued in 1993.
