Chuck Ripper: Bennett's Tree Kangaroo Bennett's Tree-kangaroo is one of only two species of tree-kangaroo existing in Australia and is endemic to the dense tropical rainforests of the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland. The only member of the kangaroo family to live in trees, the Tree-kangaroo spends most of its day sleeping in the branches of tall trees. Primarily nocturnal in its habits, this marsupial emerges in the evening or at twilight to feed on tree leaves, flowers, grasses and fruit. The Tree-kangaroo has a stocky body with powerful forelimbs. Its short, thick fur grows in the opposite direction on its nape and back, enabling the animal to shed rainwater. Unlike other kangaroo species with tapered tails, the Tree-kangaroo's tail is long and cylindrical, and helps the animal to maintain balance. Agile hind legs allow it to climb easily among tree branches. The Tree-kangaroo bears a single young -- called a joey -- that climbs into its mother's pouch to grow for 10 to 12 months. Even when it leaves the pouch, the joey continues to nurse for several more months. The Bennett's Tree-kangaroo has been endangered due to habitat loss, but remaining populations are believed to be stable. The survival of this species appears to be assured by the presence of reasonable numbers in national parks and reserves.
