Chris Calle: Black & White Colobus Guereza
The most strikingly-colored colobus monkey is the Abyssinian black-and-white colobus (species guereza). It is a large Old World monkey found across equatorial Africa in the forests of southern Cameroon, northern Congo, the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo, northern Tanzania and Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Its fur is glossy black with a cloak of long white hairs falling from the shoulders, flanks and hindquarters, the tip of the tail, and framing the face. A large monkey, its body is 22 to 30 inches long, with a tail 26 to 36 inches long, and it weighs from 12 to 32 pounds. The Abyssinian black-and-white colobus monkey lives in groups of 7 to 15 and is very territorial. It is a diurnal, arboreal species which rests more than half the day. It eats leaves and fruit which are processed by an elaborate stomach, enlarged and specialized for fermentation of a large volume of leaves. The males make low-pitched roared sounds and their chorus can be heard at night and at dawn, as they maintain their territory. A single young is born after a five-month gestation and thereafter offspring are born about every 20 months. The monkey reaches maturity at about four to six years. Its hind legs are long and well-muscled for leaping and bounding through trees, but the Abyssinian black-and-white colobus is threatened by deforestation of its natural habitat due to logging and farming. In addition, it is often killed for its meat and skin.
