Basil Smith: West Indies Giant Rice Rat More than three hundred sixty species of New World Rats have been documented by biologists, but the West Indies Giant Rice Rat is one of the few which has fallen into the abyss of extinction. Originallay found on islands of the West Indies, the huge rat was heavily impacted and finally eliminated by the unintentional introduction of hardier rats and by man's extermination efforts. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Grenada Grenadines 5¢ Giant Rice Rat stamp issued April 3, 1990. Artwork Copyright © 1991 Unicover Corporation.
