The largest and fiercest cat in the Americas, the jaguar is a marvelously equipped and fearless predator. Possessing a large head and heavy body, it is somewhat similar to the leopard, but the jaguar's rosettes are concentrated along its back and have one or more distinct spots in their centers. This powerful cat is remarkably swift and agile, and is an excellent climber and swimmer. The jaguar is a solitary night hunter that preys on a wide variety of animals, both terrestrial and aquatic. It prefers sheep and cattle, but will not hesitate to attack an alligator. In ancient Mexico, a cult of the jaguar arose in the belief that one who killed the animal would assume its feat power. Today, the jaguar survives in reduced numbers only in South America, with the largest population centered in the Amazon rain forest.

This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55¢ Jaguar mint stamp issued March 8, 1997.
