Gene Jarvis: Smilax kraussiana Plant The name Smilax kraussiana was used by the ancient Greeks to identify a number of different plants. This modern genus, however, consists of about three hundred and fifty species of woody and herbaceous climbers or scramblers of the lily family. Sarsparilla is obtained from the roots of some of these tropical species, while their foliage is used ornamentally as cut greens for floral arrangements. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for The Gambia 1d Smilax kraussiana stamp issued December 18, 1989. Artwork Copyright © 1990 Unicover Corporation.
