Kristin Rosenberg: Messerschmidia argentea - Kiden In the Marshall Islands, Messerschmidia argentea is called Kiden. It is also known as the Tree-heliotrope and is a member of the borage family, which includes such flowers as the diminutive Forget-Me-Nots and Comfrey. Its name commemorates Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmid, a Polish botanist who died in 1735. The native range of Kiden is vast, extending from Southeast Asia to Taiwan, Japan, northern Australia, Polynesia and Madagascar and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The colorful shrub, with its small white and pale green flowers, has considerable merit for planting near the sea because it withstands unfriendly environments and grows well in pure sand.
