Mel Crawford: Albania Scenes Although the warm waters of the Adriatic Sea constantly bathe the shores of Albania, the rugged character of the land and the people is best expressed by the Balkan mountains which cover most of the land. These mountains have traditionally isolated Albania from much of the world, and in these mountains the eagle emblem of Albania -- still flies. Fiercely proud of their independence and determined to make their own way in the world, the Albanian people resemble in many ways this majestic bird. In fact the local name for Albania is Shquiperi, the "eagles' country." Although it was once aligned with the Soviet Union and China, Albania today pursues an independent socialist course in international affairs. Relying mainly on their own labor and resources, the people of Albania have pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps into the modern world. Today, the state owns most of the farms and the means of industrial production. Fortunately, the land has an abundance of natural resources. In fact, so much chromium is produced each year, that Albania has become the third largest producer of chromium in the world. In addition to its mineral wealth, the land also enjoys a varied climate which allows Albania to produce many different agricultural products. Along the coastline, banana trees flourish and in the terraced foothills orange and lemon crops ripen in the Mediterranean sunshine. Blessed with this abundance, Albania proudly looks toward a bright future for her people.
