Not only a techer, but a writer, essayist, journalist, and politician, José Ortega y Gasset reigned supreme as Spain's foremost intellectual. Jokingly, he claimed to have been born on a printing press, for his life seemed to revolve around the printed word. Throughout his life his published essays diverged from the ideas of his government. Yet, his great insight and clarity of thought insured his popularity wherever his works were read. He gave his readers the feeling that they were seeing things for the first time, and simultaneously seeing them in truth. His colleagues diescribed his prose as incisive, like an arrow hitting square on a target. In his works he spoke to modern man synthesizing the questions of politics, economics and science that plagued him. Once in recognition of Ortega y Gasset's wide popularity, Spain's ruler Franco offered him the prestigious title Official Philosopher of Spain, but only if he agreed to delete certain essays from his works. Promptly and proudly, he refused. Rather than live in Spain under this title, José Ortega y Gasset chose voluntary exile in Argentina. He described his life's political confrontations: "If there is something that characterizes my life, it is that I have had to struggle with the world's dramatic future -- the future on which I had my feet." For most of his life, until his death in 1955, Ortega y Gasset wrestled with man's ideologies and today many of the world's great intellectuals still ponder and debate his profound philosophies.
