A brilliant mind and spiritual leader, Albertus Magnus is considered to be the foremost universal scholar of the thirteenth century. As a Dominican friar, Albertus taught at several monastic schools in Germany. And later, after teaching at the University of Paris, he became director of the newly-founded General Studies in Cologne. Magnus is credited with introducing the works of Aristotle, as well as Arabic and Jewish science and technology, to the Christian Middle Ages. And, his writings on science and natural philosophy were of such profound wisdom that they directed much of the scientific development of his day. Albertus Magnus based his research solidly on his common sense. He did not include in his writings hearsay or ideas he felt were contrary to his own understanding. Pure and simple, it was an intense interest in the workings of plants, animals, and minerals about him that drove Magnus to write. And, he found ways to glorify God through studying and writing about these things. He was forever amazed at the wonderful workings of nature and he spoke often of his love for the world's creatures and the God whom he felt created them. Under Pope Gregory XV, Albertus Magnus, the profound and dedicated scholar, was beatified. Later, he was canonized and pronounced an ecclesiastical teacher.
