Gene Jarvis: Jaguar In the deep jungles and shore forests of Argentina, the sleek and silent Jaguar stalks its prey. Moving fluidly along the jungle's leafy floor, this great cat seems to possess a cunning dignity. The Jaguar's caot is a golden yellow spotted with black rosettes which undulate with the strides of the cat. During the heat of the day the Jaguar remains hidden in the foliage ... its spotted coat concealing this beautiful creature in the sun-dappled shadows. This cat prefers to hunt in the darkness of night, and usually begins its nightly stalks at nightfall. Because the Jaguar is fond of water, it often searches out its prey along the wooded banks of rivers and in grassy marshes. Here, the cat will prey upon waterbirds, tortoises, and deer. A good swimmer, the Jaguar will follow its prey into rivers and lakes, and will not hesitate to attack even an alligator. Usually the Jaguar stakes out a well-defined hunting territory which it defends against the intrusion of all other predators. Only in mating season does this animal seek the companionship of its own species ... after which the animals separate to continue their solitary lifestyles. The female Jaguar will give birth to her blind cubs in the shelter of thickets or beneath fallen trees. The young grow quickly, and soon they are able to accompany their mother on her evening hunts, and will remain with her for two years.
