Gene Jarvis: Chimpanzee A primate whose appearance and behavior is often compared to man, the chmipanzee is often considered to be one of the most intelligent animals on earth. Chimpanzees generally live much of their life in the treetops where they dine on ripened fruit and insects. Families of six to ten indiviudals usually live together and exist as part of a larger communities of Chimpanzee bands. During the day the Chimpanzee families chatter to one another as they climb about the trees searching for food. At dusk, they build a nest-like platform between a fork in a tree on which several Chimpanzees may huddle together, often covering themselves with leaves to keep warm. At sunrise, the Chimpanzee families awaken to begin another day of frolicking through the trees. Aside from man, the Chimpanzee is often considered to have one of the highest mental abilities of all animals. Although they do not have a spoken language, they are able to communicate with people through the use of symbols and sign language. Indeed, someday people and Chimpanzees may be able to share each others' thoughts.
