Gene Jarvis: Pampas Deer Argentina is a country whose geography ranges from icy-blue glaciers to heat-parched deserts. Her western border is lined with the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Andes which tumble down to vast, grassy plains -- known as the Pampas. This grassland stretches down the entire length of the country ... forming the most extensive plain of level land in all of South America. Many types of animals make their home on these broad grassy fields, including one of the worlds's smallest deer, which takes its name from Argentina's plains -- the tiny Pampas Deer. Standing only 2 1/2 feet tall at the shoulders, the Pampas Deer roam the dry, open plains of Argentina and Brazil. Originally, these beautiful animals sought the protection of wooded areas; however the deer have been forced to expand their grazing areas into the less protected areas, causing these small deer to become quite shy. Pampas Deer are usually a rich reddish-brown color with white undersides. The antlers of the males grow fairly striaght and upright, and are always limited to three points. Unlike other species of deer, the placid Pampas Deer do not used their antlers in rutting battles ... and the growth and decay of the antlers are not on a regular basis. This may due to the fact that the Pampas Deer have been known to mate at any time of the year.
