Mark Schuler: Frances E. Willard Frances E. Willard was the first woman to have her likeness placed in National Statuary Hall. As an orator and social reformer, her influence reached all across the nation and to England. Willard was born in New York, but her family moved to Ohio and Wisconsin while she was growing up. As a child, she preferred the outdoor occupations of her brother, but found frontier life lonely for a young girl. In 1859, she graduated from the Northwestern Female College in Illinois, valedictorian of her class. Willard responded to the emerging idea of independence for women and chose against marriage, accepting a teaching position. Later, she was to serve as president of the Evanston College for Ladies. She also wrote articles and even a book by age twenty-five. In 1874, Frances E. Willard joined the temperance crusade and soon became president of the Chicago Woman's Christian Temperance Union. By 1883, she had gained such prominence, she was able to found and serve as president of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union. And in 1891, she was president of the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Willard also used her positions to further the cause of woman's suffrage and helped organize the Prohibition Party.
