From children's camps to disaster-relief centers, non-profit organizations exist to provide unique philanthropic, educational, religious or humanitarian services. Some organizations have politically oriented agendas and lobby vigorously in Congress to produce desired results. Others disseminate information. Many independent non-profit organizations operate under a broadly-based national establishment such as the United Way. The Community Chest, the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Traveler's Aid and the Urban League receive funds from the United Way's coordinated efforts to solicit private and corporate donations. Contributions to many non-profit organizations are tax-deductible under IRS regulation 501(c)(3), but the organizations must conform to Internal Revenue Service guidelines governing non-profit status. In 1989 non-profit organizations received $114.7 billion in contributions. More than $96.4 billion came from the generous pockets of the average American citizen, and religious organizations received more than 47 per cent of the total.
