Gene Jarvis: Giant Panda The Giant panda is a rare animal native only to China. Its natural home is bamboo forests deep in the mountains of northwestern Sichuan and southern Gansu provinces of China, where the climate is mild, rainfall abundant and the temperature averages about 20 degrees Centigrade all year. Pandas roam to 10,500 feet and higher -- as far as bamboo persists. The Giant Panda has a white, chubby body with black legs and a broad black band across the shoulders.
