Larry Nelson: Wissahickon Creek Paper Mill This artwork features the Rittenhouse paper mill that stood near Germantown, Pennsylvania, on the Wissahickon Creek. The first paper mill in British North America, it was originally built in 1690 by German immigrant William Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse carried his chosen craft of paper making from Germany to Holland in 1670, and from Holland to North America in 1688. He settled in Pennsylvania and established his own mill in 1690 with a company of men that included noted Philadelphia printer William Bradford. Unfortunately, in 1700, the original mill was swept away by high water. The second mill, built in 1702, was also later destroyed, but this time by fire. This painting is based on black and white photographs of the third and final mill, circa 1770, which remained standing into the late 1800's. Rittenhouse himself died in 1708, but he had established an American industry that has endured for over three centuries and today represents more than eight hundred mills. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Postal Card for the U.S. 15¢ Paper Mill issued March 13, 1990. 5UX145 Artwork Copyright © 1990 Unicover Corporation.
