Marjorie Saynor: Children of Algeria In a land composed largely of the Sahara Desert, most Algerians cling to the Mediterranean coastal region where a strip of cropland, city, and forest support their life, However, the boys featured in this artwork live near the great desert. They are the sons of herdsmen who travel the grassland steppes with their flocks of sheep or herds of cattle or goats. The town they live in is made of clay and most of their homes have no windows, so the blistering heat can be blocked out. These towns, or casbahs, are of the old Arab-style architecture which is still very much a part of Algeria. In the village courtyard, it is still common to see young boys playing draughts on a checkerboard drawn in the sand. These ancient games have become an Algerian tradition. But, where ancient shieks used pieces of ivory for their markers and an elegant morocco leather board as their playing surface, today's young people often mark off their playing surface in the sand and use rocks as playing pieces. In addition to their games with friends, Algerian children also enjoy the fun of riding their pet camels. From earliest childhood, the Algerian rides his camel or "Mehari," as he lovingly refers to his beast of burden, and when dismounted he often feels awkward for so much of his life is spent on the animal. In a country of vast desert spaces, the camel has traveled many, many miles for the Algerians. Indeed, man's life on the desert would be very difficult without this large beast.
