Marjorie Saynor: Children of the British Virgin Islands The children of the British Virgin Islands are heirs to one of the loveliest lands on earth and a history just as fascinating. The children depicted in this artwork are exploring that past on one of their islands's sandy beaches. Treasure hunts, such as this one, can produce all sorts of captivating results. Buried on this sandy shore may be relics left by a Spanish explorer like Christopher Columbus who discovered the islands in 1492. This early visitor, and others who followed him, left an important legacy for the children of the Virgin Islands. In fact, the islands' name, Virgin Islands, was bestowed by Columbus himself. Seeing the multitude of islands and the sea pounding against the rocks, sending up towers of spray that looked like a procession of robed figures, he named the islands, the Islands of the Eleven Thousand Virgins, in honor of St. Ursula. In the years following their discovery, the Virgin Islands have been the site of rich ports, bustling slave markets, headquarters for pirates, and a favorite vacation center. It is little wonder that even today children enjoy combing the beaches for buried treasure lost by a greedy pirate, or a Spaniard preparing to reurn home from a visit to the New World. In addition to the fun of searching for lost treasure, young Virgin Islanders, like the thousands of people who visit the area annually, enjoy the mild climate of this tropical paradise which produces some of the most exquisite vegetation in the world.
